Future of Braddon flats open for consultation

The ACT Government is inviting the community to have its say in the re-development of the Currong Apartments, and Allawah and Bega Courts when public information sessions on the future of the precinct are held this month.

ACT Minister for Housing Joy Burch said the ACT Government had asked Housing ACT to prepare a draft Master Plan and develop a draft Territory Plan variation for the possible re-development of the three sites.

The Government will not make a decision on the possible re-development until consultations have occurred and the Master Plan is received and considered. The planning study will be discussed at two information sessions later this month, which tenants, nearby residents and businesses and any interested parties are encouraged to attend.

“Residents in the surrounding areas, stakeholders and those with an interest in the redevelopment of the precinct — including traders in the Civic area — are urged to attend an information session to find out more about the study and to let Housing ACT know about their thoughts on the proposed development,” Ms Burch said.

A planning study will explore the merit of redeveloping the three complexes and developing and constructing a range of environmentally sustainable, high quality residential units in their place.

“These will double the number of residential properties in the precinct. It is important that the views of all interested parties are taken into consideration in determining the future of the three sites.”

Ms Burch said the proposed development would respect the heritage areas of Braddon and would present an improved urban design outcome by linking the road network from Braddon to central Civic.

The ACT Government wrote to residents of the 228 Housing ACT dwellings in Bega and Allawah Courts last week inviting them to attend two private information sessions, one of which was held on Saturday – another will be held this week – where they were told all public housing tenants would be offered alternative public housing and be given assistance to move if the site was developed.

The community information sessions will be held on Monday 19 April and Tuesday 20 April at the Bogong Theatre, Gorman House from 4.30 pm – 6.00 pm.
