ACT Children and Young People Minister Joy Burch is urging Canberrans to get involved in National Youth Week in the ACT, which ends on Sunday.
Ms Burch today attended a Youth Homelessness Matters Day even in Garema Place, organised by the ACT Youth Coalition, to acknowledge the plight of homeless youth and affirm the ACT Government’s commitment to support the delivery of youth services.
The ACT Minister for Youth, Joy Burch joined Canberra’s homelessness services and young homeless people at the ‘Youth Homelessness Matters Day’ event to raise awareness of youth homelessness and to celebrate the resilience of young people who are experiencing homelessness.
“This National Youth Week event served to highlight the issue of youth homelessness, which the ACT Government is committed to addressing,” Ms Burch said.
Several homelessness youth services participated in yesterday’s event, including Lowana Youth Services Incorporated, SCOPE Youth Support Program, Galilee Incorporated, and Gugan Gulwan.
The ACT Government has recently begun the implementation of a number of new initiatives to address youth homelessness including the Street to Home and the Foyer Model programs, which focus on meeting the needs of young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
There are several events left on the National Youth Week in the ACT calendar every day until Sunday which celebrate all aspects of Canberra’s youth and incorporate the region, and Ms Burch encouraged the community to get involved.
“Whether it is the Weston Creek and Tuggeranong Centre school holiday activities or the Northside Community Service’s KickStart Photo Language Exhibition launch on Thursday at the Belconnen Arts Centre, there’s something for everyone.”
Youth week continues in Canberra until 18 April 2010. For further information on youth week activities visit www.youthweek.com
