ACT Minister for Women has today encouraged Canberra teenage girls to apply for grants of up to $2,000 to help with further study or development in their area of interest through the Audrey Fagan Young Women’s Enrichment Grants program.
The program, now in its second year, is an ACT Government initiative to help young women who would struggle to realise their goals without financial assistance. It is one of three initiatives under the Audrey Fagan Scholarship Program, which also includes the Audrey Fagan Post Graduate Scholarship and the Audrey Fagan Churchill Fellowship.
“In 2009, the inaugural Audrey Fagan Young Women’s Enrichment Grants program helped six local young women pursue their dreams in a diverse range of fields,” Ms Burch said.
“The grants helped one aspiring novelist with her goal of becoming a published medieval fantasy writer, another recipient to go to Singapore to take part in an international ballet competition, and a promising jazz musician to record an album.”
The grants are available to young women aged 13 to 18 and will provide one-off payments of $2,000 to enable five young women to study or seek further development in an area of their passion.
“By providing the grants while they are still in their teenage years they are able to begin their journeys earlier to career or academic success.”
The grants honour the ACT Policing’s first female Chief Police Officer, Audrey Fagan, who showed leadership, passion, perseverance and commitment in both her professional and personal life.
Applications open today and close on 2 July 2010. For more information and application packages on the Audrey Fagan Young Women’s Enrichment contact the ACT Office for Women on 6205 0515, email women@act.gov.au or visit women.act.gov.au
