Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services Ms Joy Burch MLA, has today announced that a site in Greenway, near Tuggeranong College, has been selected as the site of a new Tuggeranong Senior's Club.
"The site in Greenway was chosen following considerable consultation with local residents and senior organisations through the local community council," Ms Burch said.
Between 2002 and 2006, the number of Tuggeranong residents aged between 55 and 65 grew by 54 % - a population trend that shows the importance of a facility like the Senior's Club.
"The Government supports ‘active ageing,' and this new club will offer a range of events and activities for older residents.
"The Club will be designed to enhance the social, sporting and cultural lives of seniors in the Tuggeranong region," Ms Burch concluded.
Work on the site is scheduled to start over coming months, with an ACT Budget allocation of $1.8 million.
Proposals for the management of the premises will be sought from interested parties.
The new clubhouse is expected to be up and running by 2011.
